I am Kabelo Kesebonye, a PhD candidate in the star-studded
field of astronomy (not to be confused with astrology). What's the difference between the two you ask? Uhm, let's
see.. Well, one studies the universe beyond earth's atmosphere and the other one is what we humans use to justify
our undesirable personality traits 😁.
My research work focuses mainly on investigating the environmental
factors that affect star formation in and around galaxy clusters at low redshifts (z ~ 0.15 - 0.35) using observations obtained from the
MeerKAT Radio Telescope.
I am a research student at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in the ever-warm and beautiful city called Durban in South Africa. I am ever curious about anything and this had led me to love pursuing answers and solving problems. I love the challenge of finding a way to address tough questions and discovering solutions. Perhaps that is why I love studying astronomy and the satisfaction that comes from discovering answers to some of the long-standing questions about this universe that we inhabit.
I am very passionate about education and inspiring the young generation through Maths and Physics tutorials as well as outreach programs. I spend my Saturday mornings volunteering at Marrianridge High School, where I tutor grade 8 and grade 12 Mathematics. I also have a passion to develop simple to use tools that provide a good guide to everyday necessities. Just to mention a few: A python Jupyter Notebook that gives people a 'first-look' to Data Science and analysis of South Africa COVID-19 data. This was something I designed as a campaign to keep people engaged during the early days lockdown. I have also designed a simple web calculator that computes estimated costs of South African import duties on different product categories.
